ASSESSMENT:
WHERE ANIMALS MEET THEIR NEEDS
WHERE ANIMALS MEET THEIR NEEDS
Assessment Summary: For the final summative assessment for this lesson, students will be creating a habitat for an animal that has been discussed during the lesson in class. This will include either a chimpanzee, penguin, or dolphin. Students will communicate their findings of observation by completing Where Animals Meet Their Needs activity sheet on an animal of their choice. Once the students have picked their animal (penguin, chimpanzee, or dolphin), they will brainstorm that animal’s needs based on the observations and discussion in class and write those needs (minimum of 2 needs) in the provided “planning box” on the worksheet. On the same sheet of paper, the students will glue their animal to the page and draw that animal’s habitat around the animal. The students should draw the things their animal needs and should be able to communicate their ideas using their picture. The students will need to label the needs within the picture they draw (i.e. water, air, bugs, fish, trees, etc.). This will be assessed according to the Where Animals Meet Their Needs Rubric (click HERE to view). The student must receive a 5 on the assessment rubric. The teacher will collect the assignment to guide further instruction.
To receive full credit, the student will include a minimum of 2 needs both in the “planning box”, and in the drawing. The student will draw the appropriate habitat for that animal. The students will share their drawing with a partner.
Directions:
Pick an animal and make a list of at least 2 of your animal’s needs in the planning box. Glue your animal on this page and draw your animal’s habitat and the things your animal needs. Label 2 of the needs in your picture.

Assessment Blueprint
It is highly important to compare one's own summative assessments to the assessment blueprint at the bottom of this page and the 6 Quality Filters. Based on the formal summative assessment that I created in my Quality Lesson:
- Each objective within the lesson can be measured according to the analytical rubric provided (click HERE to see rubric).
- According to Bloom's Taxonomy, each item is aligned with its' appropriate cognitive demand - communicate = application, present = comprehension (click HERE to view Bloom's Taxonomy).
- Each item has a clear and identifiable answer - each animal has said needs that the students will discover throughout the lesson and be able to communicate and present through formal assessments.
- CLEAR TARGET - S.IA.02.13 - Communicate and present findings of observations.
- CONTENT MATCH - Students are communicating findings of observations through Where Animals Meet Their Needs activity and students are presenting findings of observations through the classroom Animal Needs Chart.
- PERFORMANCE MATCH - Students are both communicating and presenting information through the intended activities.
- USE CLEAR LANGUAGE - Students are answering the question, "Based on your observations, what are the needs of either penguins, chimpanzees, or dolphins, and how does their habitat provide these needs for them?" Students can refer to this question, as well as the objectives, on the board at all times during this lesson.
- ONE CORRECT ANSWER - No multiple choice questions - not applicable.
- FOILS/DISTRACTORS NEED TO BE PLAUSIBLE - While there are no 'incorrect answers' per say, if the student gets a need incorrect, it would be because they used the pictures available and their sense of observation to come to this conclusion.
- To see my clear process for grading steps, visit My Beliefs on Effective Grading and Scoring & Grading Plan. To see how I will gather data from the assessment, visit Class Data Set. Communicating data results to students and parents can be found under the tab, Scoring & Grading Plan.
The chart below communicates the clear expectations that should result from the summative assessment that can be found in my Quality Lesson.
